The Gotland Russ is actually a horse, and has a horse’s conformation, skull proportions and temperament. They can easily carry adults for long periods of time. This makes them excellent for adults who want to keep smaller horses, or older adults who are apprehensive of being so far off the ground. They have all the advantages of a great warmblood, in a nice small package.
Because they are a horse, and not a pony breed, they breed up in s
ize very easily. Therefore, the breed registry is very strict for breeding stock, they must not exceed 13 hands, although there is no minimum height. In Europe, they are evaluated using the same methods as their larger warmblood cousins. Before they can be certified for breeding they are evaluated by three judges, once they have reached three years of age. Only the individuals showing traits closest to ideal are approved for breeding.
The Russ are very strong in relation to their size, and are capable of carrying adults. They were used as draft animals on the island’s farms and are used often today in driving. Because of their temperament, the Russ are extremely versatile; they have shown success in the show ring, three-day eventing, jumping, dressage, and driving. In Europe they are one of the most commonly used ponies in the harness racing world. No other breed of comparable size can out- trot a Russ; the world record for harness racers category B (ponies up to 130 cm) is held by a stallion, Gumino.
Ideal for kids! Ideal for competition!

Ideal for everyone!
Gotlands are ideal for children’s first mounts, and were the first mounts of Swedish Crown Princess Victoria and Olympic Dressage competitor Ulla Haarkanson. They are intelligent, curious and very rarely spook. When startled they may spin around and give the new object a funny look, but they don’t run away. They are strong herd animals and seem to take special care with children.
Because of this, they are very popular as a children's first horse. They can be trusted, but they will also do all the things kids will want to do, and will excel at most sports because of their athleticism and willingness to work.
